What is abnormal bleeding?

Abnormal bleeding, or abnormal uterine bleeding, is a symptom common in women’s health because it includes a few different types. Abnormal bleeding includes any bleeding outside of your monthly menstrual period that comes out of your uterus by way of your vaginal canal. You have abnormal bleeding if you experience:

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that causes hormone imbalances because of an overproduction of androgens. In some instances, thyroid problems cause hormone imbalances leading to abnormal bleeding. 

Growths in the uterus

Uterine growths like fibroids or polyps, which are usually benign, cause abnormal bleeding for many women. 

Cancers of the reproductive system

A rare cause, cancer of the uterus or cervix, can lead to abnormal bleeding due to the cell changes in those regions. 

Other possible causes of abnormal bleeding include infections of the cervix, platelet dysfunction, and blood-thinning medications.
